Am I ATOL protected?

If your flight or holiday is ATOL protected, you should have received an ATOL Certificate as soon as you made any payment towards the booking, either by e-mail or by post.

Examples of ATOL Certificates are shown below.

We advise you to check your booking documents to check whether you received one.

Who is protecting your trip?

If you received an ATOL Certificate, you should check the section: “Who is protecting your trip?”

If the company stated on your ATOL certificate is not part of the Thomas Cook Group you should contact that company directly to seek advice on your booking.

How to find out if you are ATOL protected

When you book an ATOL protected holiday or flight, the travel company is required by law to provide you with an ATOL Certificate. This will set out details of your ATOL protection.

If you are not sure if you are ATOL protected, please see our advice how to tell if you’re ATOL Protected.

If you bought your travel outside the UK

ATOL is a financial protection scheme and primarily protects consumers buying air travel that departs from UK. If your booking was ATOL protected, you should have received an ATOL Certificate confirming this. If you are not ATOL protected, we advise you to contact your insurer or card issuer for advice. This ATOL guarantee applies to all customers on ATOL protected package holidays with Thomas Cook or any company part of the Thomas Cook Group, regardless of nationality or where the holiday was purchased from.

Package holiday protection is European wide. If you are a consumer located in an EEA state other than the UK who booked their package with any of the UK established Thomas Cook package organisers, you will be financially protected by ATOL. If you did book with one of those organisers, you should have received an ATOL Certificate when you paid for your booking.

You have a Thomas Cook flight as your return journey, alongside another flight provided by another airline

If you are due to return to the UK on or before 6 October 2019, we will be arranging a new flight for you. Depending on your location, this will be either on CAA-operated flights or by using existing flights with other airlines.

If your holiday is ATOL protected with Thomas Cook, and your return flight to the UK is after 6 October 2019, we will be making individual arrangements for you to return to the UK with existing flights on other airlines. Details of these will be sent directly to these customers. Non-ATOL protected passengers flying back to the UK after 6 October 2019 will need to make their own new travel arrangements. If you booked your flights through another travel company, please contact them for advice or speak to your insurer or card issuer.

You booked just a hotel with Thomas Cook

ATOL protection only applies to hotels when booked as part of an air inclusive package holiday. Consequently, if you bought a hotel only, this will not be ATOL protected. You should contact your card issuer, bank, or travel insurer for advice on whether you can claim a refund. Some non-flight packages or hotel bookings may be protected by trade organisations such as ABTA.

Difficulties contacting another travel company or travel agent that is not part of the Thomas Cook group

Due to the numbers of customers affected by the failure of Thomas Cook, you may have some difficulty getting through while they try and contact their customers who are currently abroad. We would advise that you also check their website for information.

If you are currently abroad and due to return to the UK on or before 6 October 2019, please be assured that the Civil Aviation Authority is arranging for all passengers whose flights have been cancelled to return on a new flight, where possible. Where we are not able to provide a new flight you will need to book your own return flight.

Please see our guidance if you are currently abroad.
